The Stigma Around Tutoring

After COVID disruptions in learning, families all across the US are now increasingly relying on tutoring to support their students’ education. The Brookings Institution found that students placed in the 50th percentile could soar to the 66th percentile with customized instruction from tutors, and consistent tutoring is one of the only reliable methods to help every child succeed in academics. So why is there still a stigma around seeking help for your child? Historically, teachers have only referred remedial students to receive a little extra help after class. Outdated beliefs and societal pressures created false beliefs that tutoring is only for students who are behind. Tutoring greatly benefits these students, of course, but outdated beliefs and societal pressures created the notion that one should only receive tutoring if they are behind in their subject. An unsupported theory came about that any person who receives outside help is not “smart.” However, this could not be further from the truth!

If any student has the drive to learn, understand, and excel, they could only improve their intelligence and success with extra academic support. Tutoring has consistently shown it helps students increase standardized testing scores, fosters a deeper understanding of subject matter, improves GPA, increases graduation rates, and allows students to become closer to being admitted to their dream school. Tutoring allows students to learn at their own pace whether that be slower or faster than how they learn in school. It also allows students time to conquer difficult subjects with thoughtful questioning and understand the content in different contexts. Our role model match approach helps to ensure we can meet your student where they are at and help them grow whether they are needing to catch up, keep up, or stay ahead!

“Learning is not attained by chance, it must be sought for with ardor and attended to with diligence.”

— Abigail Adams, second First Lady of the United States.
