The Power of 3

Parents, let’s face it – it’s been a long school year.

Between remote work, remote learning, and a world-wide pandemic, we are all exhausted. And while the end of the school is near, it’s not over. Whether your kids are still remote learning or back in school, here are three simple ideas to keep your kids engaged and focused on finishing this school year strong.

Celebrate success.

Boosting self-esteem can have real impact on thinking and learning. After a more than a year of remote schooling, our children are hungry for more engagement and connection. Set up a quick assignment for each child to write down 3 things they are proud of from this year. Then set up a family meeting to review those things (and the things you as parents saw). Better still – make this a pod activity and let the kids hear from each other.

Set (3) school year-end goals.

Goals are a great way to stay focused. No matter when your child’s school year ends, they still have time to work through missed assignments or challenging class work before the end of the year[SC1] . These can be age appropriate of course, from simple like clean out the pencil box or supply drawer, or more challenging – build a summer learning plan (learn a new skill – sailing for instance). Each child should then develop (with a parent or other adult if needed), milestones and accountability (as in – who is going to help guide and keep them on track).

Schedule a pod field day.

Regardless of your school’s ability to have the tried and true, year-end field day, you and your fellow pod parents can set up a field day. Use the older kids to develop and monitor the activities. Have a least three activities and make sure there are simple prizes for all.

Congrats – you did it.

You [SC2] survived this crazy year. And while all of our students and families should set aside time to relax and unwind during summer break, this can also be a terrific time to boost the study schedule and plan ahead.
